  • I got an email about migration. At first I thought I have no vm so why they sent the email to me.
After login I realized there are some active services which I gave up by bi,trianually payment.

@lapua said: i understand. however, i don't need the 5 vps in holland. the actual proximity to the dc kruppstr. 105 in ffm is worth a lot and advantageous. some dc in the cocaine harbour in amsterdam doesn't earn me any points.

@ZA_capetown said: Oh noooo @ Frankfurt though, it is my favourite location and the one I wish I had more servers at :-/
(currently have 3 in FFME of which 2 are on the migration list now)

Why not consolidate by reducing US locations by half, take away Tokyo, but double down and stick with Frankfurt rather? (I of course conveniently ignore the probable greater cost of Frankfurt compared to US servers)

I also really like Frankfurt (more than Amsterdam, probably) and love xTom, but if we're going to be realistic and make the right business decision, I already know what that is and due to the way these events happened in succession (you could say first starting with UPS not delivering all Frankfurt servers a long time ago, then Frankfurt coincidentally not getting the new servers it was supposed to get, and finally almost all servers there deciding to die) it means out of all locations we can get rid of right now it would be that. It's a lot easier getting rid of a cabinet that coincidentally only has two functional servers as well as an expiring contract coming up than to consolidate US cabinets that are relatively full, even while disregarding contracts or cost.

What would have made the most sense would be taking away Tokyo, however, for the time being I've decided that will be more trouble than its worth at this time. If we discontinue Tokyo, we have to first be prepared for 10,000 tickets.

@cybertech said: i love AMSD029 the most, but the mass migration from frankfurt will give it a real stress test.

Amsterdam number of servers are doubling, the new servers are already racked and ready. So it should not affect you in terms of people being crammed in.

@cybertech said: instead of having so many locations mostly with uptime issues, why not scale down temporarily in terms of locations and number of active nodes, spending less time on support/troubleshooting and having more spares to swap around and create the next TYOC037 or AMSD029 with more than 100 days uptime.

This will actually be a real & clear benefit of all this and the main reason we would be deciding to do away with the location if that occurs. Of course there are also other obvious benefits but I would not personally do away with the location just for those other reasons. I do think in terms of uptime, being in just Amsterdam versus split between AMS/FFM will mean an improvement.

@Jab said: Welp, IP renumbering at Amsterdam too.
NEW YEAR NEW IP, NEW VIRMACH MOTTO.

I probably could have written the email better but your IP would not change if you're in Amsterdam. You'd just potentially be powered down and have data moved from one Amsterdam server to another, to ensure they're balanced in the end.

The reason it only affects 128 through 254 in last octet is how we're splitting it up across new servers, and to keep it neat behind the scenes.

@Mumbly said: But I am not sure if this specific announcement said anything about IP change. It seems just maintenance.

@Mumbly said: So in case you stay in Frankfurt it means that you will get a new IP today and in a few months from now most likely a new again. With all forthcoming changes in between this means something like 5th IP change by the end of the summer.

I don't remember if I clarified this earlier so I'll just paraphrase what I wrote out (probably only to myself) yesterday. We could keep IP addresses the same for the FFM --> AMS change. The only reason that's not being done is to speed along the migration and do it more quickly/sooner since customers are actually coming in from dying servers.

But for the two remaining FFM servers, if location is discontinued, those would go to Amsterdam with their IP addresses intact, assuming those two do not also coincidentally start malfunctioning sooner.

@ZA_capetown said: Very glad and relieved that Virmach is alive and ok, I was really getting worried that he ended up in hospital or something bad :O

Sorry to worry you guys. I didn't go anywhere and was eager to come back. The only reason I left OGF indefinitely was due to who owned it and that was very difficult doing because I'm sure many people think it was for some other reason and that this was a repeat of that. I won't just randomly abandon LES, but from time to time there may be several week unannounced absences at the very least and that just indicates the free time I use to usually post here is (a) being spent elsewhere or (b) it doesn't exist.

    • I was young once and VirMach was a great host ... I want moar deals and I want to pay because I am sure that somewhere in the distant future they will be great again (the reality: you won't be young ever again or VirMach great again ... unless they sack all those too good to be true deals you're paying in hope that in 9 years from now they will be good again)
    • they are great, I have 20 servers and only 4 of them are down (the reality: dude, that's altogether 80% uptime)

I actually specifically remember you from a long time ago (by your username, assuming you are the same Mumbly as OGF.) So I've read and taken all your comments as a serious "vibe check" based on your previous (IIRC) very positive sentiment about VirMach. It's definitely been very concerning when it shifted toward you being concerned to an increasingly greater level when it comes to future outlook and hopefully when everything is finally in order, you'll still have stuck around with us so I can continue using you as a constant litmus test for customer perception. :p

(into) Update 12:12PM -- FFME004 is being worked on before we can begin as it had additional issues last night.

@Jab said: WE BACK AT FFME04, WTF (?)

The node itself didn't go offline, issues reported last night for some customers on a specific disk, but in this case the entire node didn't spiral out of control.

Anyway I came here to say that almost everyone requesting to stay in Frankfurt will be getting a response saying it's not possible and it's not in any way a conspiracy, it just turns out the two fullest servers in Frankfurt were the stable ones. We processed probably 15% of the requests before running out of space.

It might be possible after the migrations to evaluate the health of the servers that were emptied and try to get them working by removing some disks or using parts from one on another to get a third fully functional node going for anyone who wants to move back in the coming weeks. So if you were told no, the message will have instructions to respond back in 3 weeks to check again.

Cool - so other disk are not fighting, better chances for successfully migration!
Also @Mumbly it seems that we are sharing the disk, can you like stop fucking abusing it - other people can behave and they don't have problems? /s

    https://billing.virmach.com/networkissuesrss.php had a change.

(added) Update 3:45PM -- FFME004 is now stable. All customers requesting to remain in Frankfurt have been processed, although many were unable to be accommodated at this time.
