Main reason to use WordPress is frankly because it’s cheap and solves a lot of simple repetitive problems smaller businesses have like “I want a blog, I want a basic contact site, and I want it done cheap/quick”.
The downside is, WordPress sites are objectively worse quality and bloated. Even the best WordPress sites.
This is because of how old the platform is, it’s coded in a lot of backwards compatibility that you almost certainly don’t need.
WP is 20 something years old now, it’s not exactly cutting edge tech and I don’t make my new websites using it.
I made a brand new site that I can still optimize another 20% that ranks on the front page of Google even after being out a week. I doubt I could have accomplished that without custom code for my needs.
If you want a generic blog/contact site done same week and only wanna spend 200$, choosing WordPress vs. CMS - WordPress is definitely for you.

If you use crappy themes an too many (crappy) plugins, it can suck. But a lot of its criticism is like people who can’t drive stick complaining about Renault’s manual transmission.
