Sure, I know I have at least one photo where I asked my friend if they liked my cable management, and this is someone who has no idea how servers work or what they were looking at so they just changed the subject.

Any other photos, for now just imagine really old Supermicro SC813 chassis with hotswap bays in the front, but I'll take some more photos once I go down to the datacenter "today" actually you know what I'm going to get ready now since it's already past midnight.

I was just getting myself distracted again working on the server configuration page while I was creating USBs for the RAID controller flashes. My thought process went something like "let me figure out what's a good Rufus alternative for Linux, oh I probably should also get a nice text editor too for when i'm work on wrapping up the configuration page. Oh no, WinSCP is for Windows, it's right in the name, what do i use for that? Where's my USB to SATA connector?" Then I found my USB to SATA connector, and I remembered I'm trying to copy off an M.2

  • @VirMach Is that a VirMach IO shield? :o

PS: Thanks for the pics, loving this journey and the 3700X!

  • Everything looks normal, on our end. As in the switch is up, not overloading, technically has data over the period, didn't log an outage for some reason. Looks healthy, nothing lost power. No alerts from the datacenter, by the time I started trying to fix it, looks like it returned. Doesn't look like an attack, our monitoring system looks weird, if I recall correctly this means heavy packet loss (it has data over a period but... yeah I don't know how to describe it, just one of those things.)

I'll look into it a bit more just to see what happened, but I think we're in the clear.

    Anyone still having specific issues?

That's the one I'm talking about, on our end we get more granularity, what I was talking about is that it was reporting CPU and other data while being "down" for a portion of the time so that means it had some connectivity as it doesn't send data and backdate it. Which means likely heavy loss, not "technically" down but so heavy that it did report it as offline because it didn't pass the validation of like however many multiple monitors across the globe steady for more than X minutes.

Yeah, during the course of the "outage" (that was the effect!), the graphs were blank during that time period.

Why did I buy a coffee maker? That's a year of a Virmach dedi.

Edit: I'm bad at math. It's 3 coffee makers per year of a dedi.

With sugar makes sense why you’d feel that way.

I always kind of knew this from personal experience but I just looked it up to confirm it before sounding dumb. Caffeine either spikes blood sugar or something like that so if you also have sugar with it that can cause a bigger spike and blood sugar spikes feel like headache/drunk for some people I guess including me. Especially if you’re sensitive to one or both.

Try taking it with the amino acid L Theanine to reduce the spike and if you are taking it with sugar try something else or less. L Theanine also balances out blood sugar, allegedly, with coffee. If it feels weird taking vitamins with your coffee then you can be British because the thing that has it naturally is tea including black tea. That part I didn’t know until now, I thought it was only green tea. Makes sense why I used to always drink black tea as a kid with sugar and it was fine but not with coffee.

I need to swap out the IPs we have in San Jose, they cause a lot of weird issues. They happen to be from Iran I think originally.

I don’t know if it’s related I’m just throwing that out there, what’s more likely that’s happened before is datacenter network engineers have misconfigured a second edge switch twice in the past randomly with no notification but they usually figure it out.

  • It's so cold here I actually need to start running benchmarks on the Epyc servers so I get some heating when I sit down on my laptop. Right now they're the ones with the strongest fans set up to pull to the back and I'm sitting in the hot aisle so I'm just getting blasted in the face at like 10C

  • Show of hands, does anyone actually want the 9240-4i's in HW RAID?

The more I learn about it and work with them the less of a fan I am, I've probably convinced myself to flash all of them to HBA mode and get it over with before I waste any more time and you guys waste yours on it because the end result, even if perfect, will likely be worse than software RAID in every way (the setup, "lack of" maintenance, failure, support overhead, and the whole part where it's not really a RAID controller it's more like the capabilities of an HBA marketed as a RAID controller which may have worked 10 years ago I guess. Like quite literally they also sold it as an HBA, that's why I can flash them to HBA.)

and that japan server IP originally from Iran ISP provider, rent though ipxo, and finally someone paying for that(the ban)

Let's state this story in a different way.

Some group of people working at a 200 billion dollar company got together and thought the best way to ensure they're not providing services to a customer in a sanctioned country is to ensure that they immediately ban a customer for accessing their account from internet in that region, and their best way to represent "accessing their account from internet in that region" is to pull third party data on where the IP address was at some point in history registered, without much verification, to that region.

Yeah, I don't think the "issue" is the IP address at that point. Something more directly related though is that a lot of system administrators do similar "smart" security tasks, where they pull IP subnets manually once and map them to regions and ISPs, then block them from their network. Usually they don't even pull the list from a database, they just find someone's static list from 2017 on Github.

Still having issues even in HBA mode, and now I'm quite upset. It seems like some operating system(s) decided to just disable the hardware, like the device ID. I don't even think Windows has ever done something like that? That's a thing now? Probably all RHEL based version 8 and up (Alma and Rocky too.)

They specifically went out of their way to drop it even though it would otherwise "work."

Now I can't trust them not to just do the same thing with other HBAs or controllers. There's a difference between something not working because it just doesn't work and doing it this way. I mean I could "technically" do a workaround, by building custom kernels.

Trying to decide if I want to just give up on them and avoid sunk cost fallacy. I might just switch gears over to the E5's at this point. Either way, magic 8 ball says "oh my god, it's another weekend and you're STILL not doing the sale?"
