    My wallet is ready and willing, black friday is just around the corner, let's go! Who doesn't need more idlers?

  • I’ll also cancel 6 vps.
    2 are down since months now.
    Should I keep 1 as a relic ? =)

    I think three is enough for me, one from 2018, just for fun. Not ready to give them all up yet and I might be keeping a partial eye on vps.blackfriday :D Yes it has been a rollercoaster, but if you're getting decent resources for a price of two cups of coffee per year I think it is worth it.

    I've been waffling on if I should let my tokyo 2tb storage server go, but damned if it isn't the most reliable system I have here. I don't even need storage in japan anymore and have plenty of other various storage, but it's just so damned cheap, like $4/mo. I wish all of the networking was as good.

    3 is a good number, I have 3 that I will keep until VirMach is no more, totaling like $20/yr. I hadn't been able to access one of them for who knows how long, sat down today to see wtf was going on, and I think it's just been sitting for a year needing the network reconfig'd. oops. I should really put the rest of my servers through their paces and see how I left them. The $60/yr beast of a build-your-own I grabbed last December has been better than the average here, but $60 is a lot for just an idler, and I haven't really put it to much use, so that might actually go in a month.

    I'm still optimistic about my dedi, but something must've ate shit over the weekend, can't ssh in anymore. Probably something one of my users did, because it's still up and mostly working. I don't think it'll ever replace my fiberstate dedi, but still looking to be a great value if the stupid routing will ever get sorted.

  • I had decided not to buy from Virmach, canceled all. But Deals came up and I bought them again. I will cancel all again and decide not to buy anything. But who knows in the future?

  • I will absolutely get more vps from @VirMach this year B)

  • WSSWSS OG Guru Meditation Error

    I just got my renewal notice for a handful of them. Haven't decided if I'm just going to keep them all, or pare down because the cost is barely enough to justify keeping the IP space. Plus, I seem to be on the bulletproof hosts, so why would I want to give that up?

  • I was going to ditch a couple of mystery boxes that came up for renewal until I noticed the price was biennial rather than annual. They're remarkably solid boxes for 10 bucks a year.

  • oh nice, routing doesn't seem fixed on the dedi yet, but there's some improvement. The dedi control panel seems to be back, the console/power status/etc are all working again. turns out I was down because something really did eat shit.

    rebooted and back to "normal."

  • "Upcoming Payment"

    I think I won't even if its 6$, 6$ is 6$.

    Is all good? Hope you have a nice weekend

  • . > @Neoon said:

    Yeah: with Black Friday imminent there are probably lots of people getting "Upcoming Payment" emails to renew their annual plans. But many of those same people are being asked to pay again for VPSs that have been down for months: and with only AI responses to support email. I'd bail too.

  • Yep, I get it, and can't fault anyone for knowing when to cut their losses and walk away. I know my use-case is pretty rare, I use quite a few servers for a truly online lab for devops/sysadmin automation. Having some servers be flakey isn't a dealbreaker, I get to test actual resiliency. I get to host random game servers for friends, tons of personal junk, and my job is happy that my skills stay up to date. Some of mine have been surprisingly good, one of mine was down as much as it was up. If you need a CHEAP dev server, I haven't found a better option, but we're a fair bit past the VirMach that could be somewhat reliably be used for lowend production services. And, some of us are just gamblers that are hoping he pulls it back together again, for nostalgia's sake.

    good fun while it lasted, no more expectations here 😀

    Same here. Really no use any more even as nodes in a 'worker pool'.

    @bakageta I admire your stamina, but once you perfect a strategy for a downed VM, then what is the point of purchasing more VMs that will go down.

    In the past, the VMs were at least useable for non-production stuff. They're less useful for that now, but out of my 5 virmach VPSs, all 5 are up, 2 with recently-spotty internet. It's not like "my vm has been down for months!" is the average, it just doesn't phase me if that happens to one. It helps that I'm not trying to run a static set of things, I'm spinning up something to test, getting satisfied with the implementation and fallback, implementing it elsewhere, and blowing them up, leaving the VPSs idle a lot. I don't need as many as I have, but the cheap price makes it easy enough to have enough idle to always have something usable for my needs.

    The automation around dealing with issues is far from a "perfect strategy and done" kind of thing, though. It's not like you just set it up once and forget about it, everything works perfect with no adjustments. If that were the case, I'd be out of a job. If you care about more than manually intervening when there's a problem, you have to do the maintenance on your automation, otherwise you'll find none of it works when you actually need it.

    This is one of my lower-end Digital Ocean boxes-

    $ w
     17:33:47 up 951 days, 39 min,  1 user,  load average: 0.28, 0.25, 0.27

    KPatched, up to date, decent hosting, services restarted when necessary.

    But still, my Virmach-

    $ w
     12:34:08 up 227 days,  8:36,  1 user,  load average: 0.12, 0.09, 0.14

    When it works (and you don't need intervention), it's great. When SHTF, you get to keep the fan, and whatever you can lick off of the blades.

    I've stopped buying cheap-for-cheap-sake stuff, but I'll probably hold onto my remaining Virmach until they just stop working. I mean, I'm barely paying for the IP space rental.

    I got rid of all virmach systems but one free one that been up over 700 days. 700 days ago was around the end of all the major migrations that were going on. I think it is is in or around EWR now, but I stopped trying to keep track after about the third address change.

    Easter? I kept that one as long as I could, but for some reason it decided that it was being abusive despite only running thttpd to serve the single OpenBSD conf file for the kernel. It kept getting suspended weekly, even after I literally nuked the bootsector.
