Anyone tried ZimaOS/ZimaSpace (NAS OS from CasaOS devs)
Just wiped my homeserver and want to do a clean install. Was leaning to Debian/Ubuntu + CasaOS, but ZimaOS (by the same devs) looks like an interesting option, too :P

Looks very commercial product. Button “buy” is all over the place. Do not exchange Debian for this.
Seems like they're following the concept of UmbrelOS who also offer free software but try to push their hardware (that ships with their software).
Tried CasaOS the other day (by Zimaspace team) and that one isn't commercialised (yet). Pretty straightforward, although I also gave Portainer a try (which can be conveniently installed from CasaOS) and I might just use that one the next time. That said, recent Reddit posts have been complaining about Portainer getting more and more pushy with their paid version, too.

Briefly tried it.
I try to steer clear of stuff like this tbh. The underlying tech (usually docker) isn't all that difficult to do without GUI assistance and these things always fall prone to enshitification. Nothing against devs getting paid, but the drift in terms over time irritates me
That's been going on for 3+ years. Experience with portainer was what drove above mindset. First it was free. Then some stuff moved behind a license key but its ok cause you get 5 business licenses free for life. Then supposed "for life" business licenses turned into non-commercial only. Then the 5 turned into 3. At which point I'm wondering why even self-host anything if it's all:
Thanks for the summary. Seems like Portainer isn't all too noble anymore, too.

I have been there before. Trying to replace cloudron (it is the best self hosted platform, but 💸💸).
Trying 1panel, yunohost, coolify. At the end I ended up with coolify, because it has so many apps I need. It also has build in feature to manage database such as cron auto backup to S3 storage which is very important to me (because I'm lazy to set it up myself. Hahaha). Sometime the apps template doesn't work, but usually I just need to edit the docker compose or the environment a little bit, and it works again.
The other thing is coolify works with traefik as the reverse proxy I familiar with, so it is good for me.
The one that prevent me to use casaos or umbrel is that iirc they don't have the built in backup functionality. It is really a big deal. I'm too lazy to setup database backup manually everytime.
I have had good success just running Proxmox + LXC for the services. If you need to run docker, you can also use Komodo. It's a FOSS alternative to Portainer that works very well.
My biggest grip with all these system is that you generally can't install stuff that is not available on their stores without having to go around them and most of the features they offer like SSO and the sorts won't work with these.
I think Cosmos Cloud goes around this somewhat, but still face the same issues as its counterparts.
I love Cloudron too, but it's too steep of a price for a feature set that doesn't justify it to be honest. Although, if you are willing to pay to not have to do almost anything, it should work for you.
CasaOS + Debian is better because ZimaOS will overwrite your changes on update.
