Hi, i've been loving the plattform so far. Small feature request, could we validate haproxy with a simple A record instead of a txt? The use case is you might not own a domain, but want to use a free subdomain like the ones from afraid dot org or duckdns

Also, many free subdomain services block creation of records with "_" like "_tierhive-validation" so that is a no go as well.

I speak fluent sarcasm and broken logic. | I would agree with you, but thæn we’d both be wrong.

I will speak to my colleague, we had this discussion early on, and I also did not want TXT records, but I remember him winning the argument. The reasoning was abuse-related; I just don't remember the details.

If you can't afford a domain, do you really need hosting? Most cases point to 'no'. It's not like it's $35/yr with a 2 year buy-in anymore.

At whatever price point domains are these days, it doesn't beat $0, and you can get a lot of cool subdomains for nothing and have ssl in your personal projects.

Also, the conversation is about a always free service provided by tierhive, so expecting a free service to work with a free subdomain makes more sense then using paid domain with free services...

    Well…….

Being free doesn’t mean that it will always work with others services.

Free often means limited, in some way.

  • @AnthonySmith can you support creation of multi forwarded port like "1111, 2222, 3333" instead of processing it 1 by one

The issue is the operation is not fast and it will soon be multi hypervisor so that you can use any of our IPs depending on what is closest to reach your VPS no matter where the VPS is.

For I assume obvious reasons there needs to be table locking when we do this, although the work it pushed via a worker so can be queued, there is a risk that someone could ask for 10 ports which could take 10 whole seconds to complete, so we need multiple workers to avoid a long wait for people and every worker = more overhead.

Not impossible but honestly for the value it adds in reality it could introduce more problems.

We are working on 'smoothing things out' and making things more efficient and adding more to the hypervisor stack all the time so when we look at this again I will keep your request in mind.

If it's possible without much risk, sure.

yes you would need to switch to a location that supports 8GB Ram, currently Australia, Germany, and Canada, Gravelines france will also support it which is coming very soon.

But my real advice is to optimise your stack.

For whatever reason, Vint HIll IPv6 just went down when I was working on the machine. Tried removing and reallocating, but it didn't make a difference.

Poland went down today; there was an announcement up during the issues. I literally took it down 10 minutes ago once it had been stable for a few hours. I thought everything that was running beforehand was brought back up, I even made a list by hand, sorry if I missed one :(

I've subscribed to the platform news btw. It is subjective, but I'd like to see something in my mail box about issues. I'm absolutely fine with hoster having issues, it is happens sometimes, it's ok. But I really want to know if it's my issue or hoster's issue.

No practical difference, but even having something like "we are aware, but eta is unknown" is way more healthy for my mental than not having information at all.

It's more like a suggestion than a complain.

I understand, i will take the feedback, I will have a chat about make a new email group for issues, that was not really so much the point of platform updates, but I take your point.

I guess you did not notice for the 5 or so hours it was having issues before being restarted, the announcement and info was there all the time the issue was there + a few hours after, try and remember this is not enterprise and this is still in Alpha, but I do appreciate the feedback.

Well, I've noticed it, and had waited for a few hours before manual cycle. And, again, I'm totally fine with some issues. I don't want and I will not blame you for that. It's just having some message about issues or potential issuses will help a lot.

EDIT: I'm bad at reading. No, I hadn't seen any announcement, and there was none after I logged in to restart. It wasn't done automatically, I had to do it with a button.

I think, actually, just a long standing status page is the first step, it has been mentioned, its probably past due, I will see what can be done.

@AnthonySmith btw, there was "double bandwidth" (not really bandwidth, but it's easier to adress it like that) for the clients who created servers in the timespan of launching... (I forgot what was launching at that time, honeslty).

So... Question is if I migrate VPS which should be affected by this, do this bonus stays?

  • Which nodes would you say have the best CPU performance?

No that was part of the limitation of the deal, if you migrate you lose it sorry.

That's sad. Is it reasonable to have a hope of getting IPv6 for the Poland location in like half a year? Or should I just forget about the bonus and migrate?

Question about additional fee added to payment

Last time I deposited funds with TierHive, I did it from a Mexican residential IP address because that's where I was at the time.

To pay, I used my Paypal account, which is denominated in US dollars, and which permits using a US dollar denominated credit card.

The TierHIve billing panel asked me to indicate in dollars the amount of the funds I wanted to deposit, which was $10.00.

Next, the TierHive panel launched the FastSpring pop-up, FastSpring wanted payment in Mexican pesos. I couldn't find an option to set the payment to dollars. So I sent the payment as requested.

The payment went through just fine! However, on my credit card bill, I was charged $11.03 for the $10.00 payment.

    1. Did I miss a FastSpring or TierHive Control Panel currency setting?

    2. Should I have tried to use a VPN with a US IP?

    3. Did I pay slightly more than 10% for translating my dollars into pesos and then for translating those pesos back into dollars? Or was the seemingly extra $1.03 for something else such as a FastSpring fee which was not for currency conversion?

Just to be clear: Not asking for an adjustment. Not complaining. No rush. No big deal. TierHive has been more than generous giving me and everyone free tokens. Just mentioning something that possibly might affect a few other TierHive customers.

Thanks to @AnthonySmith for TierHive, which seems to work great! Thanks for any insights! Best wishes!

    What did the invoice say?

If the invoice said less than you were charged, that's a question for your credit card company who almost certainly charge a foreign FX fee.

Fastspring always will charge you in the currency of your country of origin, there is no ability to change it as far as I am aware.

UK people get charged GBP, Indian people in INR, Japanese in JPY etc, if you are in Mexico and Fastspring agrees that you are in Mexico and you complete the transaction in Paso's but with a USA bank or credit card, then your bank will likely give you a really shitty 'spot' exchange rate.

Either that, or there was a local tax to collect but that would be on the invoice, but if that was the case I guess you wouldn't be asking :)

I am not familiar with mexican sales tax to be honest.

  • @AnthonySmith said: Fastspring always will charge you in the currency of your country of origin, there is no ability to change it as far as I am aware.

And they also charge a shitty exchange rate for doing that conversion.

Selecting USD 10 and you get charged: Total: € 10,69, Includes VAT € 1,78 (20 %). So you pay EUR 8.91 for USD 10, which works out as an exchange rate of 1.12 (USD for 1 EUR) instead of the actual rate of 1.16 (USD for 1 EUR).

  • @Not_Oles said: However, on my credit card bill, I was charged $11.03 for the $10.00 payment.

It seems that if you select a country outside the US, FastSpring uses that country's local currency and applies its own exchange rate.

In my case, I changed the country selection to the US and then paid via PayPal in USD. The payment went through successfully, and I wasn't charged any additional currency conversion fee.

  • @AnthonySmith said: What did the invoice say?

@AnthonySmith Thanks for your kind reply!

Uh, I don't think I ever saw a TierHive invoice. I definitely would remember an invoice from FastSpring, which, as Merchant of Record, might be expected to have sent an invoice, but I don't seem to have any memory of a FastSpring invoice. The charge on my credit card bill is identified as "KernelKeepers," which I understand to be the the legal entity owner of TierHIve. If FastSpring is the Merchant of Record, I don't understand why the charge on my credit card bill would be identified as from Kernelkeepers.

I just looked again, on the TierHive Control Panel, to see if I could find an "Invoices" section, maybe under "Billing."

I also looked through my email again and also through my downloads.

I didn't seem to find an Invoice section on the TierHive Control Panel or any invoice in email or downloads. But I Frequently make mistakes.

None of this is a problem at all. I'm just looking into it yesterday and today because the possibility of paying for a LES ad now has appeared.

    Thanks again!

You get an email after you top up that should have a 'manage your orders' link in it follow that and you will find your fast spring invoices.

Naturally you don't find them on TierHive as we did not invoice you :)

    @risturz Thanks for helping!

I looked through the panel shown in your screenshot several times. United States seems to be missing as an option. It's just not present, or, if it's there somewhere, I missed it. I checked the alphabetical order location plus also the top and the bottom of the list.
