Where in the US do you prefer to host?

We need some feedback for our next location...

We currently operate out of 6 data centers:

  • Las Vegas, Nevada: Our main facility, hosted by Flexential, with network provided by Cogent, and Zayo
  • Ashburn, Virginia: Hosted at RagingWire (now NTT), with network provided by Cogent and NTT
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands: Hosted at Interxion (now Digital Realty), with network provided by NTT and Cogent
  • Singapore: Hosted at Equinix, with network provided by Telstra and PCCW and public peering via SGIX
  • Santa Clara, California: Hosted at Equinix, with network provided by Zayo and Cogent
  • Dallas, Texas: Hosted at Equinix's Infomart facility, with network provided by Cogent and HE

We are thinking on offering services out of Los Angeles, mostly due to China Telecom having good peering there.

We already offer services out of Santa Clara, CA, but it seems that clients from China seem to prefer hosting in Los Angeles when they need US based services.

Anyone familiar with LA data centers? We've hosted before at 1 Wilshire (a long time ago), and we are familiar with 600 West 7th St.

Where do some of you host your servers?

And other than LA, we want to open a few more locations this year. What are some of your other top choices?

    But it isn't US...

Do you target Chinese clients specifically? Or what is the purpose of US presence expansion?

Yes - if you don't need to be in downtown LA, Equinix LA3/LA4 in El Segundo are good options. LA3 is lower density, LA4 is higher density. Otherwise, for downtown LA, CoreSite LA2.

Never make the same mistake twice. There are so many new ones to make.
It’s OK if you disagree with me. I can’t force you to be right.

That's great advice. I didn't think about Equinix LA3 and LA4. We are in talks right now with Coresite about their LA2 location...

  • Anywhere in Florida, but the south-est the better, it gives me better ping in South America.

We've been looking into the Nap of the Americas, now owned by Equinix, down in Miami...

Yeah, Miami is best case scenario for me in NA. Ping is still high, but it's the lowest and usually routing is better. Not to say other locations are better, it's just a ME thing because of where I am located physically.

  • Less bog standard locations. Stuff like Tulsa, Valley Forge, etc. are perfect DR sites, and with costs rising in NYC, everyone's coming to Secaucus or Piscataway.

No one wants to be pay to be directly at 165 Halsey anymore, but that's where you want to be. The second best would be DRT and Clifton locations, which slowly expanded from Delawanna (the OG DC, used to be DedicatedNOW, colo'd there before it was EWR20)

I know people fleeing 111 8th Ave due to costing rising by 150-200% but we saw that coming.

Anyway, less standard locations, I do like Ashburn just because people forget what a true internet hub it is.

Denver is also overlooked for disaster recovery it doesn't get better from a location standpoint for natural disaters, etc. the only issue is backhaul, you'll be dealing with most traffic going through DFW, which defeats the purpose.

If you're choosing LAX, One Wilshire is where you want to be for the MMR alone where you can peer to your hearts content, and that optimizes routes while reducing transit. OW is the only reason people used Quadranet with their shitty office builing they called the 'One Wilshire Annex' - aka it's cheaper and the same connectivity.

Another hassle is people swearing it was down from their location, but of course it works at the major internet hubs. So I put UptimeKuma and SmokePing in places like Moldova or a van down by the river to show them the carfax. I wish there were more less popular yet emerging locations. One that comes to mind is Boston, MA which I haven't seen many offers from. I think PikaPods was there through some little provider, but it would be nice to have some diversity in hosts.

Where do some of you host your servers?

Miami, FL. I wish there were more options in there. Tampa/Jacksonville are "fine" and there are options for both, even on the LE space, but it adds some extra latency, so I prefer to go directly with Miami.

We actually went to see a few data centers up there last year... any preferences or experience with any of them?

Miami seems to be a popular choice :)

I mean it all just depends. I use Chicago currently.

Miami would be good choice, can get many South American customers.

Seattle can also be good - great connectivity to Asia, in some cases even better than LA. But if the focus is China, then LA makes more sense as the 3C's are present mostly in LA and SJC.

Also agreeing with @Kris - some unique locations would be nice.
VirMach did a good job with OKC, great network as well with Lumen.
