Hourly or monthly/yearly billing

I have found that many server providers now offer hourly billing plans.

It's very flexible but doesn't seem cost effective.

I'd like to hear what you think.

Hourly is great, especially when combined with terraform support

Think it's tricky for small providers though. Both on capacity management and IP rep. Someone can order an hours worth for 20 cents and do something that ruins IP

  • Depends on your use case. For jobs that don't really require a whole month of renting (like an RDP for Video Rendering, or a VPS for compiling Android ROMs), hourly rating is good, but for normal use cases, I'll say monthly/yearly makes more sense.

think about it a bit more - they’re for different things.

people who want flexibility pay a premium for it.

people who want lower costs commit more.

    they’re both useful models.

Hourly is not for the small provider because mostly people deploy hourly vms and use them for many illegeal activities

  • Hourly pricing should be best suited for large providers.

I do wonder whether a hybrid model might work. i.e. new joiners get 6 months terms minimum and if they behave that long you can probably give them free reign on hourly

Bit convoluted but solves the hit and run problem. Scammers & shitty people are not patient people usually

Really depend on workload. Like if I need an hour of processing done each day then spinning up a server for that hour each day is cost efficient even if you hit me with wild markup. If you look at the big clouds their markups of hourly vs committed are pretty fkin spicy. Still needs to be sensible, but there is a lot of fat there if only running for parts of the day
